2. Prevents dryness and brittle hair

Hair that is dry, brittle, and lifeless has been linked to hypothyroidism or low thyroid hormone levels. The primary element in our bodies that regulates thyroid function is iodine. So, you can maintain the strength and health of your hair by treating dry and brittle hair with iodine consumption.

3. Gives shine to hair

Consuming an adequate amount of iodine promotes the production of sebum (natural oil produced by the scalp) which gives shine and lustre to your hair.

4. Prevents alopecia

One of the most frequent types of hair loss illnesses that can result in front hairline receding and hair thinning is androgenetic alopecia. In both children and adults, hypothyroidism can result in androgenetic alopecia. You may need to think about increasing your iodine intake if you’ve seen any tendencies of baldness.

5. Enhances the growth of hair follicles

Ineffective hair follicle development and low-quality hair have been linked to iodine deficit. Thyroid hormone synthesis and function are similarly impacted by iodine shortage. Hair development might become sluggish in the absence of thyroid hormones, which are essential for encouraging hair growth. So, make sure you’re getting enough iodine if you notice a slowdown in your hair development.

How does iodine deficiency affect hair growth?

Your body’s overall iodine levels can affect the condition of your hair. “Dry, coarse hair from hypothyroidism caused by low iodine levels can lead to breakage and hair loss. While low thyroid hormone levels can induce early greying of the hair, high thyroid hormone levels might impact the strength of the roots,” says Dr Mahire.
