In fact, even if you are not applying hair oil properly, it can lead to hair loss.
Here are 11 hair oiling mistakes that can cause hair loss and other hair issues:
1. Excessive oiling
One of the most common mistakes is applying too much oil on the scalp and hair at a time. While oiling helps moisturize and protect hair, excessive moisturising can weigh down hair, making it limp and prone to breakage. The scalp may also become greasy, leading to clogged pores and potentially causing hair loss. Use a moderate amount of oil, covering your scalp and strands.
2. Oiling too often
Apart from excessive oiling, frequent oiling can also lead to product buildup on the scalp and hair, which can weigh down strands and make them more prone to breakage. Over time, this buildup can also attract dirt and pollutants, leading to scalp issues and hair loss. Avoid oiling your hair more than 1-2 times a week.

3. Using the wrong oil
“Different hair types require different oils. Using the wrong type of oil can lead to issues such as scalp irritation, allergic reactions, or increased hair loss,” explains Dr Kaur. For example, heavy oils like castor oil might be too much for fine hair, while lighter oils like almond or jojoba might not provide enough moisture for rough or dry hair. Make sure you choose an oil based on your hair type and scalp condition.
4. Rubbing hair too hard
Massaging your scalp with all your force is not a good idea! It can cause hair damage and lead to hair loss. It can also aggravate existing scalp conditions like dandruff or dermatitis. Be gentle when applying oil and use your fingertips to massage the scalp in gentle circular motions.
