Can hair oil cause hair loss?

Are you wondering if oiling your hair leads to hair loss? Well, it can be one of the reasons. Know 11 hair oiling mistakes you should avoid to control hair loss.

If you grew up in an Indian household, you must have heard all about the benefits of oiling your hair and scalp. From nourishing hair to straightening hair from its roots, oiling has so much to offer but is it safe for everyone? If you have been noticing increased hair loss while oiling your scalp, it can happen due to several reasons but oiling could be one of the reasons. Making hair oiling mistakes like using the wrong oil, excessive oiling, or tying hair tightly can contribute to hair loss. If you still do not believe us, hear it from a dermatologist.

Can hair oil lead hair loss?

“Oiling hair provides numerous hair benefits, such as hydration and hair growth. So, it alone cannot be the reason behind your hair loss problem, there must be other mistakes involved,” says dermatologist Dr Ishmeet Kaur. In fact, even if you are not applying hair oil properly, it can lead to hair loss.

Here are 11 hair oiling mistakes that can cause hair loss and other hair issues:

1. Excessive oiling

One of the most common mistakes is applying too much oil on the scalp and hair at a time. While oiling helps moisturize and protect hair, excessive moisturising can weigh down hair, making it limp and prone to breakage. The scalp may also become greasy, leading to clogged pores and potentially causing hair loss. Use a moderate amount of oil, covering your scalp and strands.

2. Oiling too often

Apart from excessive oiling, frequent oiling can also lead to product buildup on the scalp and hair, which can weigh down strands and make them more prone to breakage. Over time, this buildup can also attract dirt and pollutants, leading to scalp issues and hair loss. Avoid oiling your hair more than 1-2 times a week.

3. Using the wrong oil

“Different hair types require different oils. Using the wrong type of oil can lead to issues such as scalp irritation, allergic reactions, or increased hair loss,” explains Dr Kaur. For example, heavy oils like castor oil might be too much for fine hair, while lighter oils like almond or jojoba might not provide enough moisture for rough or dry hair. Make sure you choose an oil based on your hair type and scalp condition.

4. Rubbing hair too hard

Massaging your scalp with all your force is not a good idea! It can cause hair damage and lead to hair loss. It can also aggravate existing scalp conditions like dandruff or dermatitis. Be gentle when applying oil and use your fingertips to massage the scalp in gentle circular motions.

5. Keeping hair oil on for too long

Do you keep oil overnight? Avoid it! Leaving oil on for an extended period can suffocate the scalp, clog pores, and lead to bacterial or fungal infections. This can weaken hair roots and cause hair loss. Ideally, leave the oil on for 3-4 hours, then wash it off thoroughly with a gentle shampoo.

6. Not using warm oil

Warm oil penetrates the scalp more effectively than cold oil. Cold oil tends to sit on the surface, not providing enough nourishment. However, you should also avoid applying hot oil directly to the scalp, as it can cause burns. Warm the oil slightly before applying, ensuring it is comfortably warm but not hot.

7. Tying hair tightly

“Tying hair back tightly, especially after oiling, can pull the hair out of the hair follicle,” says Dr Kaur. Over time, this can affect and prevent hair growth and bald spots may appear. If you must tie your hair, use a loose and gentle hair tie or a soft cloth to avoid putting stress on the hair follicles.

8. Combing hair after oiling

Combing wet or oiled hair can lead to breakage, especially if done roughly. Wet hair is more fragile and prone to damage, and combing through it can cause hair loss. Comb your hair when it is dry or partially dry and use a wide-toothed comb to detangle gently.

9. Oiling with dandruff

Applying oil directly to a scalp with dandruff can exacerbate the condition. Oil can trap flakes and dirt, leading to further irritation and potential infection. Focus on treating dandruff with appropriate medicated shampoos to control hair loss.

10. Incorrect way of washing hair

If you are not washing your hair properly after oiling, leaving excess oil and residue on the scalp can attract dirt and dandruff. This can lead to scalp issues and hair loss over time. Use a gentle shampoo and lukewarm water to thoroughly cleanse the scalp and hair after oiling.

11. Allergic reaction to oil

Some people may experience allergic reactions to certain oils or their components. “Itching, redness, swelling, or hair loss due to inflammation or irritation are some symptoms that you may experience if you are allergic to a particular oil,” suggests Dr Kaur. Always conduct a patch test before applying any new oil to your scalp.

How to apply hair oil?

  • First, you need to choose the right oil for your hair type and concerns, such as coconut oil for hydration or argan oil for shine.
  • Warm the oil slightly, take a small amount of the oil, section your hair, and apply it from roots to tips. Avoid using too much oil, as it can make it look greasy.
  • Gently massage the scalp with your fingertips to boost circulation and stimulate follicles.
  • Leave the oil on for at least 3-4 hours for deep conditioning.
  • Now, shampoo your scalp and hair thoroughly to remove oil.
  • Apply hair oil 1-2 times a week for the best results.

Tips to control hair loss

1. Ensure a balanced diet rich in vitamins (like biotin, vitamin C, and D) and minerals (such as iron and zinc) to support hair growth. A deficiency in these nutrients can lead to weak, brittle hair that is prone to breakage.
2. Use a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo that suits your hair type and avoid washing too frequently, as over-washing can strip natural oils and contribute to hair loss.
3. Limit the use of heat-styling tools like straighteners and curling irons, as excessive heat can weaken hair protein and lead to breakage.
4. Avoid chemical treatments such as perms, relaxers, and excessive hair colouring, which can damage the hair shaft and weaken follicles over time.
5. Regular scalp massages with essential oils like coconut or almond oil can improve blood circulation, nourish hair follicles, and reduce hair loss.

6. Keep loose hairstyles and avoid tight ponytails or braids that can cause breakage and hair loss.
7. Shield your hair from sun damage by wearing hats or using UV protection sprays, especially during prolonged sun exposure.
8. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water to maintain scalp health and promote hair growth.
9. Use a conditioner or hair mask regularly to nourish and strengthen your hair follicles, helping to prevent breakage and hair loss.
