Managing Dawn Phenomenon: Anna Faith Adair’s Story

Many people with diabetes deal with high blood sugar levels in the morning. This is a condition commonly known as the Dawn phenomenon (although other factors, such as the Somogyi effect, can also cause morning heights).

This occurs due to natural hormonal changes that are consistent with awakening. Unfortunately, for people with diabetes, this phenomenon often leads to stubbornly high blood sugar levels.

I sat with Anna Faith Adair from northern Georgia. He has been managing her type 1 diabetes since 2016 and learn more about her experience with morning highs and the strategies she employs to reduce them.

What factors contribute most to your high morning blood sugar levels?

Everyone experiences high morning blood sugar levels for a variety of reasons. For Adair, it comes down to a lot of things.

How do you manage your insulin regimen to deal with morning blood glucose fluctuations?

Like many people who have just been diagnosed, Adair started with multiple daily injections to manage type 1 diabetes. She reflects,

The automated insulin delivery (AID) system combines an insulin pump with a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) to automatically adjust insulin delivery based on real-time glucose measurements. These systems are particularly effective in managing sustained hyperglycemia levels, such as those caused by the dawn phenomenon.

Adair explains the impact of switching to aid systems.

Are there specific dietary choices or bedtime routines you follow to stabilize your level?

Adair is careful about the timing and composition of your meals to prevent overnight blood sugar spikes.
