As seen in a study published in the Journal Cochrane Database System Reviews, UTI probiotics are beneficial because they help prevent infection. Here’s how:

1. Restore the balance of bacteria

Probiotics help maintain a delicate balance of microorganisms in the urinary tract. This microbial ecosystem, when harmonious, functions as a natural defense against harmful bacteria. However, various factors such as antibiotic use and hormonal changes can disrupt this balance and allow unnecessary infectious diseases to thrive. “Probiotics, particularly Lactobacillus strains, help restain the urine system with good bacteria, while competing and preventing the growth of dangerous bacteria such as E. coli,” says gynecologist Dr. Ritambala Bala. Therefore, eating UTI probiotics can significantly reduce the risk of infection and promote overall urinary tract health.

2. Inhibits harmful bacteria

Certain strains of probiotics, particularly those of the genus Lactobacillus, exhibit special ability to inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria that can cause UTIs. One of the most well-known perpetrators is E. coli, a common bacteria found in the intestines. When E. coli moves into the urinary tract, it can cause infection and irritation. However, Lactobacillus strains can effectively combat this potential risk. They accomplish this by generating substances that create undesirable environments for the growth of E. coli. “These compounds may contain organic acids, hydrogen peroxide, or bacteriocins, which can kill or prevent the growth of dangerous bacteria,” experts say. Taking UTI probiotics can help maintain a healthy urinary tract by competing with and suppressing E. coli and reducing risk.

Probiotics help strengthen the immune system and further strengthen your fight against infectious diseases. These useful bacteria interact with and stimulate intestinal immune cells to create protective substances such as antibodies and antibacterial peptides, as seen in research published in journal cells. Note: For Recurrent UTIs, use probiotics regularly as a precaution. If you are taking antibiotics, start probiotics during the course and continue after at least two weeks, experts say.

Side effects of having probiotics in UTIs

Eating probiotics with UTIs is generally safe and healthy, but overdose can cause the following side effects:

  • Gas, bloating, and mild diarrhea are the most common side effects, especially when starting new probiotics or increasing dosages.
  • In rare cases, some people may experience an allergic reaction to certain probiotic strains or ingredients within the supplement. Symptoms may include skin rash, itching, or difficulty breathing.
