Missed periods and gaseous stomachs can be signs of health problems, including polycystic ovarian syndrome. Does this combination also mean that you are pregnant?

Your period doesn’t always arrive or leave when you expect it. If ovulation (egg release) does not occur, or if hormonal changes get in the way of normal shedding of the endometrium, then there will be periods of overlookedness. Sometimes it can be accompanied by stomach problems, such as gas. A missed period and a gassy stomach are one combination that you may wonder if you are pregnant or not. After all, it is not necessarily a sign of pregnancy. There are a variety of factors that can affect your menstrual cycle and your intestines.

Do missed periods and gushy stomach mean you are pregnant?

The period of missed and gas-like stomach can be a sign of pregnancy:

  • The period you missed: It is one of the earliest and most common signs of pregnancy. “After fertilization, the body produces human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG), which stops ovulation and duration,” says obstetrician and gynecologist Dr. Scarti Jain.
  • Gassy stomach: It is caused by elevated levels of progesterone that relaxes the muscles of the digestive tract, slows digestion, leading to gas, bloating, belching and constipation.

“These symptoms can pop up one to two weeks after conception,” experts say. However, wait at least one week after the period you missed before getting a pregnancy test.

What are the periods you missed and what causes gas-sea stomach?

If you are not pregnant, the period of time you missed and the stomach like gas can be due to the following reasons:

1. stress

Chronic stress can cause periods of missed and gas-like stomachs. A study published in BMC Women’s Health can disrupt the production of gonadotrophin-releasing hormones that regulate ovulation and menstrual cycle. Therefore, it can delay or stop your period. Also, according to Harvard Health Publishing, when a person is truly stressed and triggers a combat or flight response, it slows digestion. Slow digestion can cause gas, bloating and stomach cramps.

2. Polycystic ovarian syndrome

“This is a hormonal disorder that causes the ovaries to produce excess androgens and disrupt ovulation,” says Dr. Jaina. Acne-like weight gain and skin problems are not the only symptoms. A missed period and a gassy stomach can mean you have a PCOS. They occur due to hormonal imbalances and insulin resistance.

3. Thyroid disorders

The thyroid gland, which can be felt at the bottom of the neck, helps regulate metabolism and duration. Hypothyroidism (hypothyroidism) can delay or stop the duration, slow digestion, or cause gas. “Hyroidism can also disrupt the cycle and affect the intestines,” experts say.

4. Sudden changes in weight

Serious weight loss, increased or very low body fat can stop the body from producing reproductive hormones. This can cause periods to pass and cause gaseous stomachs. “A sudden change in weight can cause digestion disruption, which can lead to gas and bloating,” experts say.

5. Excessive exercise

In particular, without proper nutrition, long, extremely intense workouts can cause estrogen levels to drop and lead to periods of missedness. “Too much exercise can stress the digestive system and lead to gas, bloating and fatigue,” experts say.

6. Gastrointestinal disorders

Conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) can cause severe gas, bloating, and convulsions. Symptoms often worsen around menstruation, which can lead to disruption in the cycle of sensitive women. During a study published in Gastrointestinal Disease, a positive association between missed periods and IBS was found.

7. Peri-menopause disorders

In women over 35-40, fluctuating estrogen and progesterone levels can cause overlooked stomachs. “They can experience symptoms such as bloating, gas, constipation, and other symptoms. It’s a natural part of aging, but in some women, they can start early,” says Dr. Jain.

8. medicine

Some medications such as antidepressants, steroids, and emergency contraception, or recent changes in contraception can delay the duration. It can also affect digestion and lead to gas. “After changing medications or stopping birth control, it can take several months for the cycle to normalize,” says an expert.

Missing period and gas-sea stomach: treatment options

After understanding the cause, you will be given the correct treatment:

1. stress

  • Stress management: The best way to reduce stress is to learn how to relax with meditation, yoga, or deep breathing.
  • Regular exercise: engage in moderate exercise, such as walking, which can reduce stress.
  • Proper sleep: Try sleeping at least 7 hours each night.

2. Polycystic ovarian syndrome

  • Hormonal medication“Contraceptives for insulin resistance, progestin therapy, or metformin help to regulate duration,” experts say.
  • Changes in lifestyle: A balanced hypoglycemic diet and regular exercise can help you manage PCOS symptoms, such as periods of missed eyes and gaseous stomachs.
  • Control your weight: Maintain a healthy weight according to age and height to improve insulin sensitivity and restore menstrual cycle.

3. Thyroid disorders

  • Thyroid medication: “If hypothyroidism is diagnosed, levothyroxine is usually prescribed to balance hormone levels,” experts say.
  • Monitoring: Regularly required for thyroid function tests to track hormone levels.
  • Meal adjustments: Ensures proper intake of iodine, selenium and zinc, which are all important for thyroid health. Antacids or digestive aids can also help relieve gas and bloating.

4. Sudden changes in weight

  • A balanced dietInstead of following trendy diets, seek a nutritious diet that contains whole grains, healthy fats and lean protein to support your hormone balance.
  • Gradual weight loss or gain: This means avoiding extreme dieting and aiming for weight loss of 1-2 pounds (0.45-0.9 kg) per week.

5. Excessive exercise

  • Reduces strength: Sweating is good, but reduce the strength to give your body much needed time to recover.
  • Focus on recovery: Prioritize recovery days, hydration and balanced nutrition.

6. Gastrointestinal disorders

  • Meal corrections: Try the Low FODMAP (fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, polyols) diet to manage IBS symptoms and reduce bloating.
  • Probiotics: Supplements may support gut health when incorporating probiotic-rich foods such as yogurt and kefir.
  • Fiber intake: Make sure you have obtained a balance between soluble and insoluble fibers to alienate stomach problems.

7. Peri-menopause disorders

  • Hormonal therapy“We will discuss options such as estrogen and progestin therapy with our doctor if we miss a period or if the stomach, such as gas, or other symptoms become severe,” suggests Dr. Jain.
  • Dietary changes: Focus on calcium-rich foods to strengthen your bones and have fibers that control digestion.

8. medicine

  • I’ll review the medicine: If you feel that your medication is causing a period of overlooked and gas-like stomach, talk to your doctor about alternative options.
  • Monitor changes: If you want to start or stop contraception, wait three months for the period to return to normal.
  • Digestive support: If the drug affects digestion, consider probiotics or digestive enzymes to reduce bloating.

A missed period and a gassy stomach are not a great combination. If you are not pregnant, it may be due to other health issues, such as PCOS or IBS. Consult your doctor before going to treat these issues.
