Whether it is your sex life, pregnancy or overall health, you need a healthy vagina. You can eat well and follow vaginal hygiene rules, but you can do a little bit more. There are times when women end up having vaginal dryness or irritation down there. In such cases, just washing your private area with water won’t help. There are over-the-counter products, but you can also try some home remedies for vaginal problems. Read on to find out the best herbs for vaginal health.

Herbs for vaginal health

There are many herbs that are commonly associated with supporting vaginal health. While their effectiveness may vary from person to person, here are some of the herbs you can try –

1. Goldenseal

Goldenseal is a herb generally used to treat digestive problems and cold as it is antimicrobial. Some women also use it as vaginal wash, says Dr Chetna Jain, Director Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Cloudnine Group of hospitals, Gurugram.

2. Asparagus racemosus

Asparagus racemosus is known for its rejuvenating properties and is often used to support female reproductive health. It can help to balance hormones and alleviate vaginal dryness, shares Dr Smita Naram, an Ayurvedic physician and a pharmaceutical herbalist. Hormonal imbalances can lead to irregular menstruation, vaginal dryness and other issues, and these herbs help eliminate these symptoms.

3. Neem

Neem is a common ingredient in many anti-acne products, as it is known for its anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. It may also help to address infections and maintain vaginal hygiene when used externally. The anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties which can help to address infections in the vaginal region and prevent the growth of harmful bacteria and fungi.

4. Manjistha

Manjistha has the power to purify the blood and support detoxification. A clean bloodstream can contribute to overall health, including vaginal health.

5. Amla

Indian gooseberry or amla is loaded with vitamin C and antioxidants, so it supports the immune system, which can be crucial for preventing infections in your private area.

6. Lodhra

Lodhra is known for its astringent properties and is used in Ayurveda for managing issues related to female reproductive organs, including vaginal health.

7. Chamomile

It is is anti-inflammatory and can be used as herbal wash or bath to soothe the irritated skin in private areas, says Dr Jain.

8. Aloe vera

Whether it is a minor wound or skin dryness, aloe vera often comes to our mind, as it has soothing and moisturising properties. It may also help to relieve vaginal dryness and irritation when applied externally, says Dr Naram.

9. Yashtimadhu

Yashtimadhu or licorice has anti-inflammatory properties and may help to reduce inflammation and discomfort in the vaginal area. Inflammation in the vaginal area can cause discomfort and may contribute to conditions like vaginitis.

10. Calendula

It is anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial, so when it is used around the vagina area, it can reduce irritation and inflammation.

Herbs can be infused into oils or creams and applied topically to the vaginal area for soothing and moisturising effects. You can even add herbs to a warm bath to help relieve discomfort and promote overall vaginal health, says Dr Naram. Some herbs can be consumed as a tea to support internal health and hormonal balance.

Word of caution: Not everyone should use herbs for vaginal health, especially without proper guidance. Pregnant or nursing women, those with allergies should avoid using these herbs unless it is under some consultation with an expert.
